It is recognized by a high number of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in patients with HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), a demyelinating inflammatory neurologic disease associated with HTLV-1 infection.
