Enrofloxacin is a kind of fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotic with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. FQ drugs chelate iron with high affinity. This chelation results in the inhibition of Fe (II) – dependent dioxygenases, which are involved in the regulation of epigenetic control, collagen maturation and HIF (hypoxia inducible factor) degradation. The side effects associated with FQ drugs are nephrotoxicity and tendon lesions. The use of enrofloxacin in aquaculture may cause the growth of antibiotic resistant microorganisms in the water environment. The drug may have a negative impact on public health and the environment.
