Oleandomycin is a 16-membered macrocyclic lactone. Oleandomycin is a classic macrolide antibiotic produced by strains of Streptomyces. Oleandomycin was initially developed as an antibiotic in vitro, but has since been phased out and is now usually used in combination in vitro with other antibiotics. Studies are underway to investigate the biosynthetic mechanism of Oleandomycin, development of resistance to the antibiotic activity of Oleandomycin, and the reactive enzymes involved in these processes.
